As a photographer, the main problem I have is with handling all the photos I take. Although the number of pics I take per outing is now much less than when I started, I still have to deal with them once I take them out of that SD card and store them in my PC. Do not delete photos directly from your cam unless you are 100% sure they should be deleted. Looking at them through your camera’s screen isn’t always enough.
Here are the steps I follow to maintain my photos:
1) Create a folder that matches the outings name, for example:
a. Halat Sunset
b. Tannourine First Milky Way
c. Falougha Group Full Moon
d. Yamoune and Falougha
e. Akoura Burgers Sunrise
f. Faraya Fog
2) Delete the unnecessary photos once you copy them on your PC.
3) Keep the edited photos in the same folder, but renamed as the following:
a. IMG_0089-Edited
b. IMG_0089-Edited-Signed
c. IMG_0089-Edited-Resized
d. IMG_0089-Edited-Resized-Signed
4) Backup, backup and backup. This the most important point of all, and I left it for last so it can be remembered. Always backup your photos. Don’t leave them on your laptop/PC and think, they are safe there and nothing will happen to my laptop.
a. Store them on laptop.
b. Back them up on portable hard disk.
c. Back them up on another portable hard disk.
d. Back up your latest folders so your newest material is safe and won’s be lost in case something happens.
e. Back them up on a cloud if you can do so as a last resort.
f. Make sure your portable hard disks are shock proof as well. 2 of mine are, but the 3rd unfortunately isn’t.
5) Store a copy of your edited photos in a specific folder for quick reference and for additional backup.
I hope these steps are somewhat helpful to your maintenance process.
Keep shooting and enjoy yourselves!
